An Introduction to Healing Touch

Healing Touch is an energetic modality that was developed within the Holistic Nursing community, by Janet L. Mentgen, RN, BSN. It compliments traditional health care and incorporates energetic techniques derived from a variety of sources. And since it has been proven to significantly enhance healing, it is approved as a continuing education course for nurses.

Healing Touch incorporates the awareness of energy and the way in which it relates to physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. It utilizes techniques to assesses the energy field and chakra system. The Healing Touch techniques are simple and powerful. And they can be used for self-healing as well as with others.

The Healing Touch Practitioner utilizes their knowledge of the location and function of the chakras to assess and impact the energy field of their client. Their use of meditative techniques helps them to remain centered, maintain their energy flow and hold a safe space for healing to occur.

The Healing Touch Practitioner uses a basic healing sequence that is the foundation of their practice. It serves to clear and open the energy channels in the body; thus allowing the innate intelligence within the body to move into balance and self-correct.

The Healing Touch Practitioner also uses this foundational technique as a way to maintain their own health and wellness

Students of Healing Touch receive extensive, in-depth training which assists them in their personal development as a healing practitioner.

Healing Touch works with the bio-field, using a light touch to influence the human energy field and chakras. These non-invasive techniques serve to clear, energize and balance the energy field. This subsequently affects the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health of the client.

The Healing Touch Practitioner connects heart to heart with the client. This heart centered relationship generates a powerful, co-creative process between the practitioner and client which serves to facilitate the client’s healing process.

The goal of a Healing Touch session, is to restore harmony and balance in the energy system. This supports the client’s health and healing.

Some of the indications for Healing Touch are…

  • Wound healing
  • Reduction of pain
  • Decrease anxiety, tension and stress

  • Enhancement of spiritual development
  • Preparation for medical treatments and procedures and to manage side effects
  • Support for the dying process
  • May be used for all ages and stages of health and illness. Animals and plants also respond to Healing Touch

History of Healing Touch

Healing Touch was developed by Janet Mentgen, RN, BSN. She began practicing energy based health care in 1980 in the Denver, CO area.

Healing Touch began as a Certificate Program, sponsored through the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) in 1989 and AHNA certification began in 1993.

In 1996, Healing Touch International Inc. became the certifying authority with AHNA endorsement.

The Healing Touch certificate program is now taught throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, South Africa and South America.

As of 2003 over sixty thousand individuals have been trained in the program, with practitioners offering services throughout the world in hospitals, clinics, medical offices, healing centers, schools, churches, homes and private practices

There are over 175 Certified Healing Touch Instructors, offering the program worldwide

International demand for the Healing Touch Program continues to grow every year.

And…these numbers are not current so I’m sure at this point they are much higher.

The Healing Touch Protocol

The Healing Touch Protocol consists of a basic sequence of hand positions; utilizing a light touch that influences the energy field. It promotes relaxation, reduces pain, promotes restoration of the body, decreases anxiety, tension and stress, facilitates wound healing and promotes a sense of well-being.

Human Energy System

The Human Energy System is an interactive, dynamic system of subtle energies that includes the chakras, bio-field and meridians; making up the energetic matrix of the human body.

Chakras

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel. The chakras are vortices of energy and centers of consciousness. There are seven major chakras. Each chakra is associated with an endocrine gland in the body and has a physical area of influence. Each chakra also has a major psychological function and a color.

The seven major chakras are the root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, brow and crown. There are also minor chakras in the joints of the legs, arms and body. The chakras can be measured and detected with a pendulum, hand scan, sound or visually.

Meridians

Meridians are energetic lines of force where the life force energy travels throughout the body. The meridians are used in acupuncture.

The focus in a Healing Touch session is the aura and the chakras. The meridians then shift in response.

Chakra Connection

The Chakra Connection is the foundational technique used in Healing Touch. This technique was developed by Brugh Joy, MD.

It’s purpose is to open, connect and balance the major and minor energy centers; chakras. The technique follows a specific pattern of hand positions that begin at the ankles and end at the transpersonal chakra which is located about 12 inches above the head. This technique can be used on a client or as a self-healing technique.

Self Chakra Connection

The Self Chakra Connection promotes balance; it is highly recommended to practice this daily. It helps to maintain a balanced chakra system; which assists and supports the body in finding balance and homeostasis.
